What’s Up? Flipbook

When big feelings hit, finding the right words can be tough – that’s where the What’s Up? Flipbook comes in!

Created by Sandhya Menon, an AuDHDer Developmental Psychologist, this locally produced tool from Melbourne/Naarm helps kids identify what they’re finding tricky and express their needs to those around them. The flipbook features vibrant illustrations by Kushla Ross and is thoughtfully designed with children’s needs in mind.

How it works:

  • What’s Up? pages assist children in describing difficult situations (e.g., “It’s too noisy” or “This is too hard”).

  • I Need pages suggest possible solutions (e.g., “More time to think,” “A quiet space away,” or “Someone to sit with me quietly”).

  • Kids can mix and match pages or create their own using the reusable sheets at the back.

This visual aid reduces mental effort, making it easier for kids to communicate, advocate for themselves, and solve problems – whether at home, in the classroom, or on the go. Its compact size allows it to fit perfectly on a desk or be easily carried in a bag, making it an invaluable tool for children, parents, and educators alike!

Onwards and Upwards Psychology

If you're looking for resources that truly see neurodivergent kids and their families, let us introduce you to Sandhya Menon from Onwards and Upwards Psychology. Based in Naarm/Melbourne, Sandhya is a neurodivergent psychologist whose work is as heart-led as it is insightful.

Sandhya brings a unique blend of professional expertise and lived experience to her practice. She's the creative force behind beloved resources like The Brain Forest and The Rainbow Brain, which celebrate neurodiversity through vibrant storytelling and affirming messages.

At Onwards and Upwards Psychology, Sandhya and her proudly neurodiverse team focus on supporting neurodivergent children and their families in connecting to their inner shine and whole-hearted selves. Their approach is all about understanding and embracing the unique ways each brain works, rather than trying to fit into a one-size-fits-all model.

While her workshops aren't offered through the Neurodiversity Toolbox, we're thrilled to feature Sandhya's accessible, neurodiversity-affirming resources. They're designed to empower families, educators, and clinicians to support neurodivergent individuals in ways that are respectful, inclusive, and effective.

Sandhya's work is a beacon for those seeking to build more understanding and supportive environments for neurodivergent children. Her resources don't just inform - they inspire.
