How Does Spoon Theory Help Us Understand Autism and ADHD?

Ever felt like just getting through the day takes more energy than it should? Spoon Theory (Christine Miserandino, 2003) is a powerful way to understand how neurodivergent people use and lose energy.

This printable PDF, created by Nurture Clinical Psychology, breaks down spoon theory and explores why “running out of spoons” isn’t just being tired – it’s a real, disabling experience that can lead to burnout and mental health struggles.

From after-school meltdowns to shutting down, social withdrawal, and fatigue, this resource helps explain why managing spoons is a constant challenge for neurodivergent people. Understanding this can make a world of difference in supporting neurodivergent kids, teens, and adults.

Use this resource on its own, or alongside Spoon Thieves, Spoon Savers, Saving My Spoons (digital notebook), or ND Me to build your own spoon-saving strategies!

🚨 Important Reminder: This resource belongs to its original creator and can’t be shared, altered, or resold. It’s designed to support neurodiversity-affirming care, so please use it with that in mind. It doesn’t replace professional support, so if you have questions, chat with a trusted therapist or specialist. 😊

Nurture Clinical Psychology

Adelle is the heart and brain behind Nurture Clinical Psychology, a warm and neurodiversity-affirming practice based in Ulverstone, Tasmania. That’s the name you’ll see on her contributions here in the Toolbox - but you might also know her as the powerhouse behind Neurodivergent Ally, home of the wildly loved card decks - Spoon Thieves, Spoon Savers, and ND Me. Yep, same person!

Adelle is a clinical psychologist with nearly two decades of experience, and she’s been walking alongside autistic people and ADHD-ers (especially those who’ve been overlooked or misunderstood - hello late-diagnosed peeps 👋) since the very beginning of her career. Her work is grounded in the neurodiversity-affirming paradigm, the Social Model of Disability, and Spoon Theory - and she’s not just a professional in this space, she’s an AuDHDer herself. So, when she creates a resource? It’s with lived experience, clinical insight, and big heart behind every word.

Through Nurture Clinical Psychology, she’s supported children (with beautiful play-based approaches), parents (especially mums in the thick of it), and people of all ages navigating anxiety, stress, trauma, and neurodivergence. While she’s not offering therapy through the Toolbox, we’re so proud to host her incredible, insight-rich, and affirming resources - the kind that help people better understand themselves, feel seen, and communicate their needs with clarity and pride. 💛

Whether you’ve landed here as a parent, therapist, teacher, or fabulous neurodivergent human - we reckon Adelle’s work is going to become a firm favourite. (And honestly? Same.)
